Are You on Autopilot?

Last week was ‘International Wellbeing Week’, a week to celebrate all aspects of life that contribute towards good health. From purposeful work to financial security, physical, mental, and emotional health, to our connection with others, the community we are a part of and the environment we live in.

Taking care of your wellbeing encompasses so much, which is why we are committed to sharing information and offering support in areas beyond chiropractic care and physical health at Epoch.

The great thing about these awareness days is that it does just that, it brings awareness and shines a light on areas that can become neglected. When I read about it, it got me thinking about where I am with my wellbeing. You may be able to relate. Do you find that you can end up on autopilot sometimes? Doing the same thing each day, and just going through the motions? I certainly do, and that is what I have allowed to happen with a few areas of my life.

Taking a moment to step back, I realised that my focus on connection and physical health had slipped. Yes, I was exercising, but I was just going through the motions, and I wasn’t really making the effort to connect with friends or meet new people.

So, I thought it was only fair that I share how I’ve tried to improve these areas that were slipping first, before posing you a little question to get you thinking!

Here’s what I have done to mix things up, and it sure has pushed my comfort zone too!

1. Changed my exercise routine:
I have taken the leap to join a CrossFit gym. It is something I have been deliberating for some time, but I have been putting it off, mainly because I am so used to going to the gym on my own, the thought of being part of a group doing new exercises, especially with people who know what they are doing scared me! It brought back memories of my first day of school, scary and awkward, but it was so worth the leap, and it has been great to train with others and meet new people. It has left me feeling energised and keen to learn more.

2. Connected with friends:
This is a big area I had let slip. I am very happy to wait for suggestions from others to meet, but it has been some time that I made the effort to organise something. So, I put dates out there and have caught up with friends I haven’t seen for some time. It has made me realise how important it is to have that time out and have some good old belly laughs.

3. Connected with family:
You may have seen that we recently went away as a team to the Peak District for our quarterly meeting. It wasn’t all work, we had lots of fun too. John brought along the simplest outdoor activity, introducing us to a ‘Nerf howler’ which is a small foam ball that you throw to one another, and as it goes through the air it makes a noise. It reminded me that it really is the simple things that bring the most joy. As soon as I got home, I bought one and it has been great fun to go to the park and throw it around with family. We are all big kids at heart but sometimes it is easy to forget.

There you have it! Simple things, but the small intentional changes have helped to snap me out of autopilot mode and focus on my wellbeing.

So my little questions to you are, how is your wellbeing? Are there any areas that are being neglected in your life and if so, how can you improve them?

It doesn’t have to be fancy, it doesn’t even have to cost anything. But just making those tweaks here and there will help to move the needle towards better health and bring more joy to your days, which is what you deserve.

Let me know how you get on, I’d love to hear and if I can be of any help please reach out.

With love,
Sarah
