So recently our dog, Zorro, got sick. Yes, he is our Spanish freedom fighting springer spaniel! However, following a holiday of meeting other dogs, he got himself a bout of kennel cough.
For those who do not know, it is a very nasty cough, similar to a severe cold or flu for us humans.
Our first realisation was his quieting temperament and increased sleeping, he always does this when feeling a little under the weather. Then his eyes started to run and the cough in earnest kicked in.
So why am I talking about Zorro? Well, I think we can all learn a thing or two about trusting our body and listening to the signals it gives us. As Zorro became sick, he (we) did not run to the medicine cabinet, he did not immediately book an appointment with the vet (GP), he simply listened to his body and allowed it to do what it does best, heal.
You see our natural state of living and being as humans is not a sick one, but a well and healthy one. If we get sick, it is simply a collection of symptoms. For example, we get a cough and a blocked nose and immediately we say we are ‘sick’. But those symptoms are actually our body doing what it needs to do to get us well. They are healthy expressions. We cough to clear our throat, and get congested to move bugs and bacteria, to allow us to become healthy again. If we immediately take something to stop the cough or prevent the running nose, we stop the body from trying to clear that which has infected us in the first place, therefore prolonging the issue.
The good news is, Zorro is making a wonderful recovery, his tail has continued to wag throughout the entire ordeal, and he bounces back fitter and healthier than before with a new level of immunity.
So, my question to you this week is, are you trusting the process?
Are you allowing your body to express health, to have the symptoms it needs to get healthy?
Your body is so much more intelligent than we ever give it credit for.
And finally, I will add that of course if you do have concerns over your health or the symptoms you are experiencing, please do seek out help from your health care provider, but be sure to keep listening to your body along the way.
With love,
Tom
