Breathing Exercises Explained

What is breathwork? Surely we do it every day without knowing, we breathe in and out all day without thinking! When we ask about breathwork, it’s about conscious breathing, controlling the breath with certain techniques, that will all be explained today.

Why is breathwork a good thing to practice?

It allows us to regulate our parasympathetic nervous system, putting us in a rest and digest state, allowing our body to process what it needs to focus on. It also helps regulate our heart rate, improve our mood and our connection between our brain and body. It can be really simple as taking a minute out of your day to control your breathing with a few simple exercises to help de-stress your system.

Here’s how we control our breathing:

– Find a space to sit and be present with your body, listen and feel your breathing in and out, recognise if it’s fast or slow, deep or shallow.

– Then we want to try and slow it down by taking some big breaths, all the way down into our belly and keeping our shoulders relaxed.

– A great way to start is with box breathing, the 4 second approach. Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, breathe out for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds. Repeat a few times until you feel calm and rested, take as long as you need.

There are also some great guided breathwork app’s and videos that can be used to help you on your journey, and always, feel free to ask myself or the team for further advice.

Happy breathing!

With love,
Lewis
