I am often asked why someone who does not have any pain should see a chiropractor, and “is it ok to be adjusted if I have no pain”?
Here is the truth first, then I will explain.
Going more than 3 weeks without having your spine checked could be detrimental to the long-term health of your spine.
Do I have your attention?!
As you know well from reading these blogs, our spine can be considered the most important part of our entire body. It is the protection of the spinal cord, the part of our nervous system that controls everything within us. Our heart, lungs, immune system, kidneys, temperature, and movement and pain. All of this is under the control and coordination of signals sent through your spine.
So, if there is a problem with your spine, the knock on effect can be dramatic for the health of your body.
So why 3 weeks?
We know that with modern lifestyles the spine can easily stiffen up and move poorly, this is more serious than you may consider. For if areas of the spine become stiff and stop moving, they stop sending and receiving clear messages from the brain. In fact, the brain becomes concerned as that stiff area will flood the brain with danger signals. This leads to the body falling into a ‘fight or flight’ reaction. Now you may not feel this, but if it is the case, your body will now begin to set up a defence mechanism. This will involve changing hormones, blood pressure and other natural processes to prime you for survival. In this state your body is moving towards sickness and cannot heal.
And while you may not have an ailment or injury now, if you were to get one, the body would struggle to cope and become sick.
Furthermore, we know that after about 3 weeks of poorly moving spinal joints, the degenerative process starts to accelerate.
So, if you want to maintain great health, have a body that can cope with injury or illness, and you want to reduce and delay arthritis, it is important to start by focusing on the health of your spine. And the only way to do that is to see your chiropractor, get checked AND adjusted if needed, to specifically correct the issue and maintain spinal health.
And I will finish with this, Hippocrates who was known as ‘the father of modern medicine’ knew this too well. He said, “to find the true cause of dis-ease, man must first look to the human frame and spine”.
So, when is your next chiropractic adjustment?
With love,
Tom
