Your spine is an amazing structure that keeps you upright, mobile, and protects your spinal cord; that communication highway connected with your brain controlling every single action of your body and forming your Central Nervous System. For many of you reading this, your ‘epoch’, that definitive period and ‘aha’ moment for your health may have been the realisation of how important your spine is.
We hear this question often, “why did I not know this before?” Often asked at the start of a chiropractic journey because unfortunately spine health is not talked about enough. I will be honest, I said that 12 years ago when I first learnt about chiropractic. I had no idea. Unlike our teeth which we see every day and have been educated to brush twice a day and checked regularly by a dentist, our spine is hidden, sitting behind us, and until those aches and pains creep in is often not thought about. But the good thing is, you now know, and there are some simple things you can do to take care of your spine.
Here are 4 ways to proactively take care of your spine:
1. Move
Your spine thrives on movement. That is what it is designed to do, and every time you move, your brain grooves because it is getting messages from your nerves. So be sure to stand up every 20 minutes during the day if you are sitting; march on the spot or have a wiggle. That, as well as incorporating some intentional exercise for at least 30 minutes a day will help to keep your spine mobile.
2. Hydrate
Drinking plenty of water during the day will keep your bones, joints, discs, and the supporting structures around your spine nourished and strong. Those injuries, aches and pains can be exacerbated by dehydration, so keep that water bottle by your side during the day and keep sipping away.
3. Adapt those Habits
The little things you do each day matter. The crossing of legs, looking down at your phone, sitting for hours, repetitively twisting, carrying bags on one shoulder, resting one elbow and leaning whilst driving; the list could go on and we are all guilty of it. Observing your habits during the day and adapting what you do, being mindful of the stress being put on your body and the position of your spine will help it long term.
4. Maintain your Adjustments
Getting checked by your chiropractor and adjusted will help your spine and body function at its best. Just like taking care of your teeth, being proactive with your spine health rather than reactive is always going to serve you in the long run.
