How Can You Keep Mobile and Prevent Your Joints From Stiffening Up?

Your body is so amazing that it constantly adapts to its environment, but it is also extremely lazy, so much so that if you stop moving a joint, it will no longer get the nutrients and blood supply it needs to remain healthy and functioning, and can eventually cause some diseases.

Synovial fluid surrounds every joint; it helps to keep it mobile and assists in fighting diseases. When the fluid is no longer sent to those joints they stiffen up and can begin to get diseases such as arthritis. I would say that the joints that are the stiffest in your body are the ones that need moving the most and require more attention. The movement will maintain the synovial fluid around the joint.

On the topic of movement, let’s talk about sitting. Did you know that sitting is the new smoking?! NASA published a study which showed that simply standing up and sitting down every 20 minutes adds 3 quality years to your life! How incredible! But that emphasises the importance of keeping every joint in your body moving to prevent dysfunction and disease in your spine.

You may be wondering how on earth you can stay mobile daily while working at a desk or driving for work? Some simple things to try are taking regular breaks (20 minutes as we know is perfect for your spine) to stand up and sit back down, we can all do that! We all spend too much time looking down and end up with neck pain, so I will say let’s look up a bit more, put your phones away and look up at the trees on a walk, or just stretch the neck and relieve tension by looking up at the ceiling when you are standing up. Creating these new habits every day will soon create better joint mobility.

So, here are some take home tips to help you stay mobile:

  • ·Stand up and sit down every 20 minutes, and look up to the ceiling too.
  • Target your stiff joints by intentionally moving them within normal range of motion, and repeat it as many times as you can throughout the day.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep your joints hydrated and functioning well.
  • See a Chiropractor for those stubborn joints for better and faster results.
