It’s Halloween, and with skeletons and spines on our minds, you might think chiropractic is all about the backbone. But is it really just about the spine? Actually, that’s only scratching the surface.
As chiropractors, we work on spinal alignment, so it makes sense that we’re associated with the spine. But the true focus is on the vital connection between your spine, brain, and overall health.
Your spine protects your spinal cord, which is an extension of your brain and acts as the body’s main communication highway. Messages from your brain travel through your spinal cord to every cell and organ in your body. When there’s an issue with your spine, it can affect your entire body’s health—particularly your brain.
The primary impact of adjusting the spine is actually in the brain. There’s an incredible, symbiotic relationship where spinal movement keeps the brain firing, and a healthy, active brain is essential to keeping the body alive and well. When the spine stops moving properly, it reduces the signaling to the brain, slowing down its activity. An underperforming brain can lead to a range of health issues.
On the flip side, getting the spine moving properly (with chiropractic adjustments) sends powerful signals to the brain, helping it to function better. This positively impacts the health of your entire body.
Fun fact: after just three weeks of limited spinal movement, there is a measurable decline in brain health.
So, next time your chiropractor adjusts your spine, know that it’s benefiting not just your back but your whole body, including your brain.
With love,
Tom
