Take Time Out – Or the Universe Will Make You

My message this week is a simple one, take some time out!

How many times have you heard someone tell you this and you simply laughed it off? Or maybe you thought to yourself, if only for a brief second, “maybe they are right but how could I ever take the time with all the work I have and the family at home?”

If you have then guess what? You are just the same as me!

I will tell you a secret, I never took a real holiday for my first 3 years in practice and I struggled to take a ‘proper’ holiday until I was 9 years in! We are all guilty and we all get caught up, however I would like to share from experience why you should take a break before the universe forces you to do so.

As I am writing this, many of you know I am actually on holiday this week. I was not going to take the week off. I was planning to delay it by a few more weeks so I could share the week off with Sarah, who is still working towards her final exams, how exciting!!

Being far more sensible than I, Sarah insisted I take the week off to relax.

So, there I was all set for my second day of holiday and as the sun came through the window in the morning, I went to get up and WHAM! The room started spinning. I initially had no idea what was going on, I fell straight back down, gave myself a telling off and tried to sit up again. But the same thing happened. The room just kept spinning, so I laid down again and whimpered to Sarah who after an initial unsympathetic reply for waking her up, listened to me and casually replied; “you see the universe is trying to tell you something!”

And there I was, forced to not move all day. Can you imagine, me not moving all day!

But I tell you what, I feel fantastic for it and even with the one day of doing nothing, my body had the chance to rest and reset.

So, my challenge to you is this. Take time out.

It does not need to be a week, or even a whole day. But at least find a few hours to break your normal routine and rest. Give your body the rest and time it deserves. Or it will force you to stop, and that could have big consequences for your health.

With love

Tom
