The seasons are changing, colds are coming, so what can we do.
Louis Pasteur, the notable mind who discovered germ theory, said on his death bed that ‘it is not the seed but the soil’. What he was saying here is that it is not the germ, virus or bacteria that makes us sick, but our body’s susceptibility and strength.
So, with that said, I wanted to write a short but purposeful blog this week to see how we might be able to improve our ‘soil’, strengthen our immune system so that we don’t get sick, or the least, do not get so ill when we do.
Here are my top 3 tips to improve your immune system as we transition into the colder months:
Chronic inflammation in the body is like gasoline on the fire of bacteria. And chronic inflammation is caused primarily by our diet and nutrition. The main culprits of which are sugar, wheat, and dairy. So, look to limit these as you wish to improve your immune system.
This is a metaphor, but essentially, if we stress our bodies in a good way regularly, this will improve our resilience. To live in constant comfort is a depressor of our immune system. Try a cold shower daily, yes, all the way cold. This will stimulate cold shock proteins and improve your immune system.
The number one cause of a lesser immune system is stress. Reducing stress can seem impossible sometimes. So instead carve 5 – 30 minutes a day to pause, do nothing, no phones. An improvement on that would be breath work, meditation, or prayer.
These simple but effective tips could really help you this cold season.
With love,
Tom
