Let’s talk about a bone that rarely gets the spotlight but really deserves it: the sphenoid.
This butterfly-shaped bone sits deep in your skull, connecting with many other bones in the head. Think of it as a keystone: if it’s off, it can throw off the whole structure of your skull, spine, and fascia.
The sphenoid affects more than just your skull. It plays a part in everything from vision and balance to sleep, sinuses, and even the alignment of your jaw and spine. Some big nerves that can be affected with its malposition are the Vagus nerve (coordinating the heart, digestion, stress, and immune responses), and the Glossopharyngeal nerve (coordinating digestion).
Because of its location and its many connections, when the sphenoid is misaligned (often from birth, trauma, or tension), it can create a ripple effect through the body.
At Epoch, we are committed to the nervous system optimisation and overall health, your spine is the gate way to that, but not to be forgotten is this bones at the back of your mouth. This is why you may have had or seen your chiropractor put their finger in the back of your mouth… trust us, there is a method to the madness.
It’s just one of the many ways we take a whole-body, whole-person approach to chiropractic care.
Small bone. Big difference.
With love,
Tom
