Health can be hard sometimes. We get ourselves on track, find some momentum, and then suddenly we’re sidelined by an illness, a deadline, or a life event that feels like it’s setting us back to square one.
Or does it?
If we’re honest and really inspect that setback, does it need to put us back to square one? Or could it simply pause our progress or force a side-step?
Honestly, a perceived setback often becomes the excuse for us to stop our habits and healthy pursuits when things become a little uncomfortable.
For example, you’ve started going to the gym regularly, eating well, and getting regular chiropractic adjustments. You feel great and are noticing the positive changes. Then you end up with a nasty head cold. Understandably, this may stop you from going to the gym, as that can exacerbate your headache or fatigue. But by the same token, we choose to stop eating well, falling for comfort food, and we forego our adjustments. As a result, our health does start to decline.
The alternative would be to accept that we may have a week off from the gym but stay strong in our discipline of healthy eating and regular adjustments.
This has been my experience recently, which is why I’m sharing it. I’ve made some great progress with my health and at the gym, but lately, Sophie, my daughter, hasn’t been sleeping well, which has led to moderate tiredness for me. It’s tempting to say I’m too tired for the gym, or that I need energy from sugary food. And believe me, I fail at this sometimes. But through introspection and catching myself in the act, I can course-correct and accept that my progress may not be as good right now. However, as long as I maintain healthy habits, it will be nothing more than a pause. When sleep improves, I’ll be right back on track—and not back to square one.
So, what can you do this week to keep your health momentum going?
With love,
Tom
