Why Is It Important to Keep Your Nerves Communicating Well?

Throughout my journey of helping people, sometimes I receive ‘unexpected’ feedback from my patients. One of my patients said to me, “after the last session, I don’t know why, but I had an overwhelming positive flow of energy in my body, I have never ever experienced that before”.

Another patient told me, “I don’t sleep well, but after the first session, I slept like a baby.”

Chiropractic is way beyond pain relief or management. In fact, the key purpose is to optimise the function of your body in a natural way, without medicine or surgery.

Every time you visit Epoch, one of our chiropractors will check and adjust the misalignment in your spine.

Some people ask “why do I need to maintain my spine when I feel great?” Before I answer the question, I want you to understand more about how a misalignment is formed in the first place.

Our spine protects the spinal cord and connects the brain and nerves to the rest of our body.

Part of our brain called the cerebellum, receives all proprioception and it tells us what is happening in the body. The cortex of our brain controls voluntary muscle movement, which plays a role of telling what the body should do.

When our spine is misaligned, it is not sitting correctly on top of each other which means the signals from the nerves received in the cerebellum and cortex of the brain will be different and unmatched. Our brain will send a corrective response to that area of the spine via the nerve pathways, which causes our muscles to contract and work. This can cause other areas of our spine and body to compensate, which may lead to posture that is not ideal, for example. When a misalignment in the spine happens, the body will also release stress hormones (e.g. cortisol and catecholamines) which can increase inflammation in the body, and these changes described above can create a vicious cycle.

Chiropractic adjustments aims to correct these misalignments, that helps to break the cycle.

Misalignments can be caused by daily activities, injuries or stress. It is very hard to avoid all of them due to life.

The above changes can cause symptoms such as reduced movement or pain, and these can gradually accumulate over time. If you imagine our body is like a ‘waste bin’ and the bin accumulates waste over time. Rather than letting it accumulate so much it over flows leading to concerns like discomfort or structural changes, it is important to clear it out and maintain harmony. Which is why maintaining your spinal health is key.

Chiropractic aims to help you optimise your body function and help you get the most out of life. I am getting my maintenance adjustment later. See you on the next blog!

With love,

Joyce
