I like to watch how people move. The way their ribs lift, the way their spine responds, even the way their hips shift as they breathe tells me so much about how their body is organising itself.
We usually think of breathing as something that just happens in our lungs, but it’s actually a complex, full‑body movement that involves your entire torso. When your body is working as it should, every single breath is a coordinated ripple through your ribs, your spine and even your hips.
It’s one of the most fundamental movement patterns we have, and it’s something we look at closely in chiropractic care to see how well your body is truly functioning.
Think of your ribs like the handles on a bucket. For you to take a full, expansive breath, those ribs need to glide upwards and outwards at the joints where they meet your spine.
If those tiny joints aren’t moving freely, your breath becomes physically restricted. It’s almost like trying to open an umbrella that’s slightly stuck: you can get it partway, but it takes a lot more effort than it should. When those joints glide properly, the whole process becomes effortless.
Your spine isn’t a rigid pole but behaves more like a dynamic chain that should move in a subtle wave with every inhale and exhale. This rhythm is essential for moving air efficiently and keeping your internal systems happy.
When parts of your spine become stiff or “stuck,” that natural wave is interrupted. It’s similar to a gear in a watch that isn’t turning quite right, which eventually affects how the whole mechanism keeps time. You might not even realise it’s happening, but your body has to work harder to compensate for that lack of spinal rhythm.
This is why chiropractic care is so vital for more than simply easing a sore back. When we perform an adjustment, we’re restoring motion to those specific spinal segments and rib joints that have lost their way.
By opening up these areas, we’re literally creating more physical space inside your body for your breath to expand. It’s a wonderful feeling when a patient gets off the table after an adjustment and takes that first big breath. You can see the relief on their face as they realise they don’t have to fight their own body to get the air they need.
Your nervous system coordinates this entire breathing pattern, from the muscles in your neck down to your diaphragm. When your spine is moving well, your brain receives clear signals that it’s safe to move fully and breathe deeply.
Effortless breathing is a rhythm your body already knows. Chiropractic care helps your system reconnect with that pattern by restoring the movement and awareness your spine needs. When your nervous system feels supported, every joint in your ribcage and spine can move with more freedom. It’s less about oxygen and more about the ease that flows into every moment of your day.
With love,
Tom
