Keeping Healthy Habits in the Tempting Winter Months

We are in the depths of Winter; the nights are long, and the days are short. Do you find that sometimes you don’t even open the curtains as you leave and come home from work, or is that just me?!

And while the Winter months are full of temptation, this is a little reminder to keep up your healthy habits at this time of year. If there was anything that we learned from COVID, it was that the comeback from long term poor food and exercise choices is painful. So please don’t let this Winter be the same!

Now I don’t want you thinking I am bah humbug on this, so what I will share with you can easily be fitted around your Winter schedule and the odd tempting treat along the way.

Here are my Top 3 Principles to help maintain your health this Winter:

1. Move Early
We all have more enthusiasm in the morning, and as the day goes on, we are great at talking ourselves out of the good habits. Therefore, my suggestion is to book in your exercise for the morning. Yes, this may mean getting up earlier or going out in the dark and cold. But NO ONE ever said they felt worse after exercise. Make the decision on how you will feel after, not before.

2. Hydrate
Cold nights and red wine go hand in hand. This is a disaster for our hydration levels, so please make sure you constantly hydrate. My top tip would be to drink a pint of water first thing, before any food.

3. Eat More Fat and Protein
Eating more fats in combination with the sugary treats can help reduce sugar spikes that can be damaging to your insulin levels and long-term lead to diabetes. So, with your treats, add a handful of nuts. And protein is what makes us feel full, so when the big dinners come out, eat plenty of protein, and protein first, to help you feel full and reduce your temptation to overindulge.

Simple tips. Make the promise to yourself that you will stay healthy this Winter, so you can live and enjoy a fabulous Summer next year.

With love,

Tom
