The Pressures of Winter: 3 Tips to Boost Your Immune System!

The pressures of Winter hits us at the beginning of each year, with an increased number of recorded colds and illnesses than other months. Did you know that to help stay away from illnesses, your immune system needs to be strong? Which is why I researched things that can help, hopefully saving you time going through piles of articles. In this blog, I will introduce 3 tips that are based on research, low cost, and are extremely effective that can be easily implemented into daily routine to boost your immunity:

1. Enough Sleep
Did you know that your body heals most during sleep? While sleeping, your body starts to release chemicals into your blood to boost your immunity. Adults should have at least 7 hours of sleep each day. Research also revealed that when we sleep less than 6 hours, our killer T cells (target infectious agents) will reduce by at least 50%. Of course, one night’s lack of sleep will not cause such a significant drop. It's only when you sleep less than 6 hours long term; that it will likely weaken your immune system.

2. Keep Hydrated

Water helps to maintain your immune system, and research suggests that adults should drink at least 2.8 litres of water a day. The body releases more toxins when we are unwell, and therefore drinking lots and going to the toilet frequently helps to flush them out. Staying hydrated also reduces the chance of getting dehydration headaches.

3. Eat More Vegetables and Honey
Your intestines absorb nutrients, which means that to boost your immune system, eating more fibre and healthy foods can help. Imperial College London recommends eating 5 portions (800g) of fruits and vegetables a day, which not only boosts immunity, but also can help to reduce the risk of heart attack and strokes. Did you know that raw honey is also an antibacterial food? Instead of sugar, honey is a better alternative for tea, not just adding sweetness, but also supporting immunity health. There are different types of honey on the market; please choose a good quality or high-grade raw honey.

These tips are tiny changes that can be easily implemented into your daily routine; so why not give them a go and let me know how you get on?!

Wishing you a healthy and warm Winter! I’m going to make myself a cup of tea with honey now!

With love,

Joyce
